They lived in a small house near the Gym, so Anthony was always permitted to go watch the Gym Battles when he pleased. The Gym Leader back then, Kay Dasin, grew affectionate of Anthony, and they soonbecame close. From his relationship with Kay, Anthony grew to fix her as his rolemodel, wanting to be just like her when he grew up: A Gym Leader. And he never thought it'd come true. At 17 Anthony set off on his own, eventually catching a Venonat. With Venonat by his side, Anthony made his way to Goldenrod, defeating the Gym Leaders prior. But when Anthony realized that Goldenrod needed a Gym Leader, he thought to himself, "Why not me?" And with this thought firmly planted in his head, Anthony set off once more, to grow stronger, so when he came back, he could be Gym Leader. Ariados can fight, but is better in double fights, when he has a partner to rely on.
